This tomato and onion smoor (relish) is so convenient to make and quite simply, yummy! A perfect side dish for those days when you need something quick, wholesome and full of flavour.
Cooks: 20 minutes Serves: 6 Level: Easy
Ingredients
- 30ml (2 tablespoons) cooking oil
- 1 large onion, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced into halve moons
- 3 large ripe tomatoes, chopped
- 1 green chilli, deseeded (optional)
- 15ml (1 tablespoon) sugar
Method
- Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over high heat.
- Add the onions and fry until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
- Add the tomatoes, green chili and the sugar.
- Cook for 10 minutes or until the tomatoes are soft, but still having some chunky texture.
- Serve warm.
Serve
- as a side with breakfast; great with fish cakes and mashed potatoes; best on a favourite South African treat, boerewors rolls
