Tomato and Onion Smoor

This tomato and onion smoor (relish) is so convenient to make and quite simply, yummy! A perfect side dish for those days when you need something quick, wholesome and full of flavour.

Cooks: 20 minutes   Serves: 6   Level: Easy

Ingredients

  • 30ml (2 tablespoons) cooking oil
  • 1 large onion, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced into halve moons
  • 3 large ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 green chilli, deseeded (optional)
  • 15ml (1 tablespoon) sugar

Method

  1. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over high heat.
  2. Add the onions and fry until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
  3. Add the tomatoes, green chili and the sugar.
  4. Cook for 10 minutes or until the tomatoes are soft, but still having some chunky texture.
  5. Serve warm.

Serve

  • as a side with breakfast; great with fish cakes and mashed potatoes; best on a favourite South African treat, boerewors rolls
